This has been an unusual year, as we have started out really fast learning our multiplication and at the same time learning division. Before showing some of the tricks that are shared in class I want to share with you some resources that will help you practice with your child.
First of all Free is always the best method, in class we are learning how to count by 2's, 5s', 10's and 9's (and 3's later this week) using our fingers. We have the best way to count. It is using our 10 fingers (at least most of us have 10 fingers). For some of the students it helps to see their fingers doing the counting for them. This method is also similar to skip counting (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc., 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 etc.) Other ways are being able to use flash cards and in my opinion the home made kind are the best. Get some 3X5 cards and have your child write the problem on one side and on the back write the product (the product is the answer in multiplication).
As a teacher I have collected some tricks that help me teach the students, and I have found that everyone learns a bit differently. So I do have a collection of ways that might help your student get it. Here are some ways to help with the 2's, 5's,10's, and 9s. Later this week I will post some tricks for the 3's.
