I hope this is a good introduction to the holiday season, a time that we can all come together and make a difference.

For December 17 - 21, 2012 Week 17

Recently one of our teachers lost their projector bulb for the SMARTboard when it wore out. The school will not provide a new one and there isn't a way that she can buy a new one with her funds. We really need to find a proactive way to provide materials that will help our students learn and provide them, our teachers and our school with tools that match our devotion to education.
Our new Physical Education Teacher approached me, and reminded me of the need we have in obtaining materials for our students in the area of Physical Education. Our equipment is slowly deteriorating with wear and tear, and with no funds to replace old broken and dilapidated equipment, our students are sadly receiving backlash from this system that doesn't stay updated with time.
In an effort to provide one way, I am setting up a Donor's Choose Website. Although the project is in infancy, eventually I want to be able to ask for a need that is worthy of our community and to be able to have individuals help us.

It is sad that education in America requires donations, and sadly the money that is tied to education is usually politically entwined with government regulations and reserved for districts that don't need, but have a good representative. Sadder still is the lack of commitment to the actual education of the student, or more politically correct the children are denied a World Class Education because of the apathy that allows this system to continue  . . .

Multiplication

Week Four:

Happy Constitution Day - The Constitution is 225 Years Old Today
http://www.delparson.com/gallery_pages/old_man_wept.html

This has been an unusual year, as we have started out really fast learning our multiplication and at the same time learning division. Before showing some of the tricks that are shared in class I want to share with you some resources that will help you practice with your child.

First of all Free is always the best method, in class we are learning how to count by 2's, 5s', 10's and 9's (and 3's later this week) using our fingers. We have the best way to count.  It is using our 10 fingers (at least most of us have 10 fingers). For some of the students it helps to see their fingers doing the counting for them. This method is also similar to skip counting (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.,  5, 10, 15, 20, 25 etc.) Other ways are being able to use flash cards and in my opinion the home made kind are the best. Get some 3X5 cards and have your child write the problem on one side and on the back write the product (the product is the answer in multiplication).

As a teacher I have collected some tricks that help me teach the students, and I have found that everyone learns a bit differently. So I do have a collection of ways that might help your student get it. Here are some ways to help with the 2's, 5's,10's, and 9s. Later this week I will post some tricks for the 3's.
