Quick Quiz

Today we are going to review where to find information for our third grade class. We will also review where you will need to go to be able to find the Flipped Lessons Go to this Link FisherFlip. This page the one we are looking at is a blog. It will be our information page or in general it will display things we have done in class. As you may have noticed the video from the first day of school. In a few minutes we are going to take a quiz online. We will need to click on the Yellow Box (or link) below to go to that quiz. I will show you the Assessment ID Number when I know everyone is ready.

The First Day of School 2013

The First Day of School

The Year has begun, and we have many ambitions.
The students were so excited to be at school after the summer months. We were so hot today, and it was muggy, hopefully it cools down a little tomorrow. We will be learning so many things from Mr. Fisher this year in third grade.

The Flipped Classroom

Welcome
http://www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/brentfanchar/
http://www.sanjuan.edu/webpages/brentfanchar/
This will be an exciting year. To introduce the classroom this year, you will become very familiar with a new concept in the coming months. Mr. Fisher's classroom is about to be "Flipped." As this is an introduction, you will get a glimpse of what it will be like in the third grade room.

You will hear more about it, but Mr. Fisher is changing the way you will be doing some of your work. Instead of doing homework sheets every night with little or no instructions, you will need to follow a video. This video will demonstrate the basic concepts, demonstrate examples and basically teach a lesson that you (the student) would normally be taught in school. With those lessons you will then come back to school ready to do the assignment in class. This "flipped" paradigm as it is being called will be more empowering to the students, the parents will be able to understand the homework, and this will allow Mr. Fisher to help students quicker and more effeciently.

To quote some brief statments "The Flipped Classroom isn't a methodology. It's an ideology. (Brian Bennett)." It means the flipped classroom philosophy is fluid and adaptable. It means that when done the right way, it can positively impact student learning regardless of the subject or classroom (http://danielvspencer.org). You are welcome to learn more about it: (Here is a Wikipedia Introduction). Monday morning Mr. Fisher will upload the first introduction to this "Flipped" Model and will show you (the students) what is expected and what you will have to do.

Donor's Choose

Subject: My students need your help!

Hi Friends,

I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed. So I've created a classroom project request at DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity.

I'm asking for donations of any size to help my kids. For the next week, any donation you make to my project will be doubled! If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get photos and thank yous from our class.

Here's my classroom request:

To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, enter the match code INSPIRE on the payment screen. This awesome match offer lasts through April 19, 2013.

My students and I greatly appreciate your support.

Make a Difference

Making a Difference is the theme for our story this week.

  • So how can we make a difference?
  • How do you make a difference?
  • How has someone made a difference for you?

This is where I wished that you the students could actually find someone that has made difference and write a story about them, edit and publish the story, and record the story on video!

Take a moment and view the following video:

NBC Nightly News - Making a Difference

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

DonorsChoose

For those that are bringing in their spare change to the school, bring it in. For those of you who would rather make sure the money is spent in a specific classroom here is a second alternative.

http://www.donorschoose.org/mrfishersthird

I will update this tonight with a project that will be curriculum based and targets the learning objectives of third grade. Right now the students are helping me decide what kind of project we should do.

We like the use of technology, but there needs to be a purpose behind just getting technology tools for the classroom.

Here is a list of my ideas that we will vote on before the end of the day. I'll let you know what we decide.

  1. To be able to do small group projects such as interviews, Reader's theater, Stop-motion-animation, and storytelling, re-enact stories that we have read, and share stories that have been written by students. It would be great if we could publish those stories as e-pub books, record them as podcasts, or even to use a video recorder.
  2. To have students be able to work on projects such as research topics of interest, study a country (a people or a culture and compare with our community), to write up reports, to finish assignments, and to share or hand-in those assignments with the teacher or with parents. Also to read articles from the local newspaper and then compare our reality with a fictional story that we have read in class.
  3. Record and interview a Hero. This would be great if it were recorded as a video, but just as impressive would be an audio recording. Think about all the heroes in your neighborhoods, everyday people making a difference in our lives.

Jackie Robinson

Happy Birthday Jackie, one of my hero's. I will be reading a book about him either today or on Friday. But this reminds me, the students are supposed to be working on projects that stretch their knowledge. First of all this would be a good person to look up and find out more information about his importance in history.

Second, we will do this during art sometime in February.

For Computers Today:

We will be taking a short quiz on Place Value:
Go to this Website: response.smarttech.com
  1. Use this PIN (the one I write on the board), and
  2. Enter your Student ID Number.

After you are done check out this puzzle I am trying to solve. I beseech you to help me figure out what this student is expecting to find at his school on January 30, :

Kevin is on holidays with his parents, but things seem to have taken a curious turn back home at his school.
What are Kevin’s classmates trying to tell him?
Art Week
This is a culmination to our activities from the past two weeks: The students have been illustrating in various ways, we even had a lesson from a couple of our students as we learned some Origami. This all happened because we read the story for the week called "What Do Illustrators Do?" Here is another artist that I have fallen in love with, at first glance it looks like Paper 3D, but I'll let you decide (I believe it was something besides paper).

Whoops!, This first one is in 3D, here is the normal clip:
