FisherFlip - First Day
What a wonderful day. This is the best class, I have 27 students and all of them came ready to learn. This is just a quick note for today. If you come back after 5:00 you will see a video of the students and their first day. The students will be telling me in the next few days if they have access to the internet. This is where the homework will be stored and will usually be instruction in mathematics. Tonight's homework is to get the "School" information papers turned back in by Friday.
If you are here, it is not by mistake: but if you follow this link you will get to the Flip Side of the Class:

Volunteer Article
http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/emotions/volunteering/article3.html and read the first four paragraphs or first section of the page. When the students finish reading, discuss the reading as a class. Ask: Why do they compare volunteering to lighting a single candle?

Roller Coaster Games
Roller Coaster Games:
These are the games that I was able to try here at school. I tried others that I know might work at home, but these are tried and tested and are school appropriate. Good Luck!

Homework (Mar. 24-26, 2014)
There were two parts to the homework tonight:
- The Chapter 7 Test is tomorrow. Here is the Review we did in class. I made sure it was corrected and given back to the student before they went home. Their assignment is to have their parents go over the parts they missed. Most of them are still struggling with fractions. I know that might be a concern. It is with me, but I also realize this is the first time fractions have been introduced at such a level, we will be reviewing these parts again before the test. Hardest part = Equivalent Fractions. 1/2 is the same as 3/6, 4/8, 8/16, and so on. But what would be a fraction that is the same as 3/4? That is where all third graders are stuck. We will get through it, and then sometime this summer when they are out playing it will hit them and they will get it! I PROMISE!
- Here is the page they did in class!
- Unit 7 Review & Test
- The second part of the homework is in preparation for the End-of-Year-Test. This is a placement test, and I would like to see where the students are in relation to what they should have learned from me the teacher. This placement test will be on two pages. One tonight, and one tomorrow. This will allow me to find any holes or parts they just don't understand.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences
Next week we will be having the chance to see how your student is doing as we meet for Parent Teacher Conferences. I have to be in Salt Lake at a special Meeting on Thursday, (Through My Lens: Personalizing History Through Documentary). This conflicts with the regularly scheduled Thursday meetings. To accommodate I will have to meet with some of you on Friday afternoon. I am sorry about any inconveniences but I can't be in two different places. To be able to meet with you I have set up an appointment calendar that will help us be able to balance out our schedules. Please be patient and realize that I will follow the scheduled times to the best of my abilities. Those that need to speak more in depth I will ask that we do so at another time.
The purpose for this meeting is to show you how your student is doing according to the recent DIBEL's screening test. This is a requirement to determine if your child is reading on grade level or is in need of interventions to assist them in reading. I will be providing a mid-term grade report at that time. Your student will be expected to conduct part of the meeting as they showcase how they are doing in class.
To be able to access the calendar appointment slots, please pick a day, then a slot and then enter your name in the "What" field and if you have a Google calendar it will save it as an event in your calendar (which you can then adjust accordingly. This will then notify me that you plan on being here at that time.

Artwork
The artwork from our class this week is beginning to get very creative. Its time to start showing off some of their work. It is fun to see third graders go from concrete thinking (tracing and drawing specific content), to the other extreme when they start thinking abstractly and are able to draw and create. Here are some samples of what they have been drawing and coloring.

Illustration
Here are some quotes along those lines (to go along with this week's lesson):
Life is the art of drawing without an eraser.
John W. Gardner
I start drawing, and eventually the characters involve themselves in a situation. Then in the end, I go back and try to cut out most of the preachments.
Dr. Seuss
Mickey Mouse popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad 20 years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner.
Walt Disney
I paint; I draw and paint - I've been doing that since I was in third grade, drawing realistically and then changing to abstract art. That was my first creative thing before guitar or comedy.
Steven Wright
A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.
Paul Klee
I was quiet, a loner. I was one of those children where, if you put me in a room and gave me some crayons and a pencils, you wouldn't hear from me for nine straight hours. And I was always drawing racing cars and rockets and spaceships and planes, things that were very fast that would take me away.
Gary Oldman
Drawing is rather like playing chess: your mind races ahead of the moves that you eventually make.
David Hockney
The first writing of the human being was drawing, not writing.
Marjane Satrapi
Usually I commit to something in my head and then I start drawing.
Jim Davis
Many are they who have a taste and love for drawing, but no talent; and this will be discernible in boys who are not diligent and never finish their drawings with shading.
Leonardo DaVinci
To do a drawing for a painting most often means doing something very sketchy and schematic and then later making it polished.
Jasper Johns

Word Work
The students thought it was fun to play with words today during class. With the new year, I am going to place an emphasis on some key areas that will help the students learn some critical skills that will be beneficial throughout their lives. The area we focused on today was "Word Work." We took the vocabulary words for this week and we looked them up so we have a good idea of what they mean. My plan is to do that on a weekly basis, and to show the students that it is fun to play with words. When I got online tonight, first thing I ran into was the following video of an author that was given a list of words from his own novel and he had to respond with a meaning for each word. I want to try it next week, so here's the video, as an example:
